Ayanavaram police near Chennai got information about the incident. Padmavati (70) and her husband Karunakaran (74) were seriously injured in the fire. The police suspected that the two had attempted suicide together. But the police understood the truth from the statement given by Padmavati before her death. Padmavati passed away at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. A few hours before that, he narrated the entire incident to the police and the case was solved.

According to the investigating officers, Karunakaran and Padmavati lived in Tagore Nagar in Ayanavaram. Their four children live separately with their families. The elderly couple was under stress as there was no one to take care of them. The couple’s children rarely visited them. They used to argue with each other continuously.

When the incident took place, the neighbors heard a loud noise from the couple’s house. Hearing the cry of husband and wife, the neighbors rushed. At that time, both were found unconscious. There were burn wounds on his body. Both were kept in ICU. Karunakaran was 50 percent burnt, while Padmavati was 65 percent burnt.

I hugged them while I was burning,’ Padmavati told the police.
