The Simaluguri police have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of a woman and the abduction of her son. According to police sources, the body of a woman was found in a drain in Rajabari Tea Estate of Charaideo district on Tuesday morning. The woman’s name is Neetumoni Lukhurakhon of Kenduguri Bailung village. Also, sources said Neetumoni went missing along with her ten-month-old son on Monday evening while going to the Simaluguri town market. Police from Simaluguri, Shivsagar, Charaidev and Jorhat conducted a rescue operation on Tuesday evening and took the child into custody.

The child was to be taken to Himachal Pradesh, police said. Acting on a tip-off, the Simaluguri police on Tuesday arrested a woman named Sistha Gogoi alias Hiramai and her husband Basant Gogoi of Tengapukhuri from Simaluguri Railway Junction. On Wednesday, the police arrested Hiramai’s son Prashant Gogoi and Nitumoni Lukhurakhon’s mother Bobby Lukhurakhon on suspicion of involvement in the case.

Nitumoni’s sister had earlier told the police that she suspected Hiramai Gogoi of her sister’s abduction and murder. Acting on her complaint, the police detained Hiramai and her husband Basant Gogoi from the Simaluguri railway station and upon questioning found the deceased’s sister’s suspicion to be correct. Police said, “The family kidnapped Nitumoni and her baby, after which they wanted to send the baby to their daughter in Himachal Pradesh. By the time the couple was arrested, their son had left with the baby by train.
