Imphal: A BJP leader was shot dead in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday. After this, the main accused surrendered before the police, while another person was arrested in this case. Informing about the incident, Thoubal Superintendent of Police (SP) Habijam Jogeschandra said that Laishram Rameshwar Singh, former Sainik cell convener of BJP’s state unit, was killed near the gate of his residence in Kshetri area in the morning. Two men came in a car with no registration number and opened fire on Singh at 11 am, he added. Fifty-year-old Singh was rushed to a private hospital after being shot in the chest. But he died during the treatment.

SP Jogesh Chandra told reporters a few hours after the incident that the person driving the vehicle was identified as Naurem Ricky Pointing Singh. He was arrested. The driver, a resident of Kinau in Bishnupur district, was nabbed in Haobam Marak area of ​​Imphal West district. Police launched a massive manhunt for the main accused, identified as Ayekpam Keshorejit (46), and appealed to him to surrender after issuing a warning.

The accused surrendered

Shortly thereafter, the prime accused surrendered before the police at a commando complex in Imphal West district. He is a resident of Haobam Marak. A licensed pistol, two magazines and nine cartridges were recovered from him, police said. He said that one cartridge was recovered from the spot.

The SP said while Naurem Ricky Pointing Singh was driving the vehicle, Ayekpam Keshorjit shot the BJP leader. When asked about the reason behind the murder, he said that further investigation is underway.
