Remarkably, Peer Abbas Siddiqui, who has been known as a Muslim cleric till now, is emerging as a political leader on the occasion of this election.
He is expected to field candidates from about 50 constituencies in West Bengal.
Siddiqui, the religious leader of Furfura Sharif in Hooghly district, has a good grip on the Dalit, Matua and Muslim communities. Here he is known as ‘Bhaijan’.
Earlier, on January 3, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi had met Abbas Siddiqui. Owaisi had also proposed to Abbas Siddiqui to contest the West Bengal elections.
Abbas Siddiqui could hurt the Trinamool Congress’ Muslim votebank. In Bengal, the Muslim vote bank has benefited the Trinamool Congress for the last 10 years.
Abbas Siddiqui’s speeches are well discussed on social media. According to some, Siddiqui will not have much influence in this election.
On the other hand, after the Bihar Assembly elections, Asaduddin Owaisi has turned his attention to the West Bengal Assembly elections.
