New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti has been convicted by a Rouge Avenue court in 2016 for assaulting an AIIMS security guard. The court on Saturday sentenced Bharti to two years in prison. He was also fined Rs one lakh.

Somnath Bharti has been convicted of injuring and obstructing the work of a government employee. The court also convicted Bharti of damaging public property and sentenced him to two years imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional one month’s imprisonment, the court said in the order. The court then granted him bail. Earlier, though Bharti was convicted in the case, the court acquitted four other accused.

Somnath Bharti was recently arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police for making remarks about Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He had to be kept in custody for several days. However, Bharti was later granted conditional bail by the court. Two cases were registered against Bharti in Amethi and Rae Bareli. One of the cases was heard in court.
