About 30 vehicles of the fire brigade reached the spot as soon as they came to know about the fire. Fire officials tried their best to control the fire. But inside the cracker factory, there were frequent explosions. Also, the fire seemed to flare up again and again. As a result, it was difficult for the fire brigade personnel to enter.
It is understood that the incident took place at 1.45 pm on Friday. Fire brigade vehicles arrived at the spot in Sattur, Sivakasi and Wembakottai. The fire destroyed about four large sheds making firecrackers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over this incident. ‘It is tragic that a firecracker factory was set up in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. My condolences are with the family of the victim for this unfortunate moment. He prays for the speedy recovery of the injured. The administration is working to provide relief to the people affected by this incident, ‘tweeted Prime Minister Modi.
The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund will provide Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 to the injured, the Prime Minister said.
Expressing grief over the incident on social media, Rahul Gandhi also urged the state government to help the injured and rescue those trapped inside.
According to the district collector, 11 people have lost their lives in the incident so far. About 24 people were seriously injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at Sattur Government Hospital.
