Kolkata: A multi-storey building on Strand Road in Bada Bazar area of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, caught fire. The fire broke out on the 12th floor of the building. Eight fire trucks rushed to the spot to control the fire. The building has been evacuated. Also, traffic in the area has been closed. So far, seven people have died in the blaze, said Sujit Bose, a fire officer. The rescue operation is underway. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the spot late last night. The fire broke out around 6:10 pm on Monday. Citizens informed the police after seeing the flames. Immediately after this, 8 vehicles of fire brigade were dispatched to the spot. The building also houses the railway office, the police official said. Police have blocked traffic on the Strand route.
