New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi had decided to ban denominations in 2016 after coming to power. After that, Rs. 2000 notes (Rs. 2000 notes) were introduced. But now the printing of this two thousand rupee note has stopped. Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur informed Parliament in response to a written question. The press was asked not to print Rs 2,000 notes in 2019-20 and 2020-21. Anurag Thakur said that the government takes a decision after discussing with the Reserve Bank regarding the printing of notes.

On February 26, 2021, 2499 million pieces of Rs 2,000 notes, 2.01 per cent of the total currency notes and 17.78 per cent denomination notes were in circulation. Prime Minister Modi had announced the closure of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8, 2016.
