New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the preparedness of the concerned states, Union Ministries and Institutions (Cyclone Yaas) to face the situation as the threat of cyclone ‘Yas’ is increasing. In this regard, Prime Minister Modi held a high level meeting. The meeting was attended by several ministers and officials. Coastal citizens, industries should be contacted and sensitized to prepare for relief and rescue operations. Prime Minister Modi directed that the people living on the coast should be shifted to safer places in time. Modi also suggested keeping the power supply and telephone systems off for short periods.

The cyclone is expected to hit the northern coast of West Bengal and Odisha by the evening of May 26, the meteorological department said. Due to the cyclone, the wind speed will be from 155-165 kmph to 185 kmph. The meteorological department also forecast heavy rains in the coastal districts of West Bengal and Odisha.

The Cabinet Secretary has convened a meeting of the National Disaster Management Committee on May 22 with the Chief Secretaries of all the coastal states and Union Territories and concerned ministries and agencies, Modi said.

The Home Ministry is monitoring the situation 24 hours a day. It is in touch with the Central Government with the States and Union Territories. NDRF has deployed 46 teams to deal with the situation. 5 States and Union Territories are equipped with boats, trees and telecommunication equipment. Besides, 13 teams will be airlifted for deployment today. 10 NDRF teams are on standby.

The Indian Coast Guard and Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operations. Army engineers are ready for deployment with test force and air force systems, boats and rescue equipment. Apart from this, 7 ships have been placed on standby on the west coast, said Prime Minister Modi in the meeting.

Prime Minister Modi instructed senior officials to work with the states to move the citizens to safer places in the most dangerous areas. Citizens in storm-affected districts should be instructed on what to do and what not to do in the event of a storm. Also, they should understand and say it in simple language, said Prime Minister Modi.
