Cow Protection Bill: ‘Beef should be banned in places where Hindus live’

Guwahati: While the country has been plagued by the Corona infection, the discussion of ‘anti-cow slaughter’ has started once again in Assam. Assam Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma has commented on the proposed ‘Go Protection Bill’. At this time, a statement has been made that beef should be banned in places where Hindus live. He also assured that every effort would be made for the protection of cows in the state. In Assam, the ‘Go Protection Bill’ is expected to be introduced in the next session.

During the discussion of the motion of thanks after the Governor’s speech in the Assam Legislative Assembly, the AIEUDF expressed concern over the ‘Go Protection Bill’. The bill would further encourage incidents like mob lynching. He also said that the country has seen many such incidents in North India before.

On this, the ‘Go Protection Bill’ was defended by the government. ‘The cow is your mother. Hindus worship cows. We will not allow cows to be smuggled from West Bengal. We want beef to be banned in places where Hindus live. We have often seen Darul Uloom of Lucknow making a similar statement ‘, said Chief Minister Sarma, who strongly supported the bill.

Sarma was speaking on Monday, the last day of his first assembly session after taking over as Assam’s chief minister. Earlier, Governor Jagdish Mukhi had clarified that the state government may introduce a ‘Go Protection Bill’ in the next assembly session.

Cow slaughter has been banned in BJP-ruled states of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. In Assam, however, the Assam Cattle Preservation Act 1950 is applicable. According to Section 5 of the Act, only animals that have been issued a “fit-for-slaughter” certificate by a veterinarian can be killed.

However, the opposition has strongly opposed the BJP’s duplicity. BJP should bring such a bill in states like Goa, Mizoram and Meghalaya. The BJP or its allies are in power in these states too, ‘the opposition challenged.
