New Delhi: The West Bengal chief secretary Alpan Bandyopadhyay has been issued a show cause notice by the Center before resigning. But taking action against them is no longer easy for the central government. Earlier, the government had issued a show cause notice to the then CBI director Alok Verma for not accepting the post of director general of the fire brigade. A chargesheet was also issued. But the government could not take concrete action against them.
Alpan Bandopadhyay resigns as Chief Secretary. He is said to have resigned to avoid legal action by the central government. This is because the powers of the central government have been curtailed after resignation or retirement. Had Bandopadhyay been in office, action could have been taken against him for contempt of order. His pension or gratuity could have been withheld, government sources said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had extended Alpan Bandopadhyay’s tenure as chief secretary by three months. He was due to retire on May 31.

The manner in which Alok Verma had refused to comply with the order of the Ministry stating that he had crossed the retirement age. In the same way, even a few can give an explanation for not attending the ministry. His explanation cannot be ignored, said a senior official at the Center.
