In a letter released by Shashi Tharoor within an hour of the court’s decision, he thanked Judge Gitanjali Goyal for today’s decision. The allegations leveled against him after his wife’s death were nothing short of a nightmare, said Tharoor. “Despite the media trials and false allegations, we still have faith in the Indian judiciary. Today, it has been proven,” Tharoor said. Tharoor also thanked his lawyer Vikas Pahawa and Gaurav Gupta.

Sunanda Pushkar’s body was found on January 17, 2014 in room number 345 of the five-star Hotel Leela Palace in Chanakyapuri, Delhi. According to Delhi Police, Shashi Tharoor was the main and sole accused in the case. He was charged under sections 498A (domestic violence) and 306 (incitement to suicide). Shashi Tharoor was granted bail in the case.
According to Special Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava, Sunanda Pushkar had bruises on her body before her death. This was also revealed in the autopsy report. Twenty-seven Alprax tablets were found in his room. It was not clear how many pills Sunanda had taken. Sunanda Pushkar was unhappy in her married life. She felt betrayed by her husband. Therefore, he had also skipped meals a few days before his death. Atul Srivastava had alleged that he committed suicide after that. However, the Delhi Police did not succeed in proving the allegations before the court.
