Chennai and adjoining districts received moderate to heavy rains on Monday. Heavy rains were also recorded in many coastal areas. Heavy rains are expected in one or two places in Thiruvallur district in the next few days, IMD officials said.
After rains in many parts of the city, mercury dropped in Chennai and the minimum temperature dropped to 22.7 degrees Celsius. Moderate rains are expected at some places in the northern coastal region and Puducherry. There will be light rain in many parts of the state on Tuesday as well, said Balachandran, Deputy Director General, Meteorological Department, Chennai. The state has started receiving rains due to strong east winds from the lower level and westerly winds from the upper levels, the statement said.
In Andhra Pradesh, rains are expected in coastal areas till January 17. Rains are also expected in East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. This means that there is a possibility of rain in some parts of Vidarbha in Maharashtra in the next few hours. At the same time, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to receive rains in the next four to five days. The meteorological department has also issued rain warnings for Odisha, Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal.

The meteorological department has forecast severe cold in different parts of Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in the next two days. Besides, thick fog is expected in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in the next few days.
