At least 56 people were killed in 70 minutes of bomb blasts in Ahmedabad. More than 200 people were injured in the blasts. The case has been pending in the court for more than 13 years. 29 bombs did not explode
Gujarat’s Surat police had seized 29 bombs from different parts of the city between July 28 and July 31, 2008. Case against 77 accused
The trial against 77 accused was completed in September last year. One of the 78 accused in the case was a government witness. Police claim that the accused is associated with the terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen. It was alleged that the bombing was planned by Indian Mujahideen terrorists to avenge the 2002 Godhra riots.
Police had managed to nab 30 terrorists in just 19 days. The rest of the terrorists were later captured from various cities in the country. The same team of Indian Mujahideen had also carried out blasts in Jaipur and Varanasi before the bomb blasts in Ahmedabad. Police from several states in the country were involved in apprehending him. But they bombed one after another. On the second day of the Ahmedabad bomb blast, on 27 July 2008, there was an attempt to carry out a series of bomb blasts in Surat. But due to a malfunction in the timer, they could not explode.
There were 15 complaints in Surat and 20 in Ahmedabad. A total of 78 people were arrested from various cities across the country. The search for the other eight accused involved in the blast is still on. The mastermind of the series, Yasin Bhatkal, is lodged in Delhi Jail while Abdul Subhan alias Tauqeer is lodged in Cochin Jail.
