New Delhi: The Kashmir Files movie based on the escape of Kashmiri Pandits is being discussed all over the country. Also, political allegations are being leveled against this movie and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also indirectly targeted the Congress by commenting on this movie saying that the historical truth had been suppressed for many years. However, a statistic released by the Union Home Ministry on Kashmiri Pandits has added to the government’s headaches.

After the violence in Jammu and Kashmir around 1990, many Kashmiri Pandits left their homes. Frequent terrorist attacks and anti-community violence forced Kashmiri Pandits to flee. Subsequent governments announced the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. However, many times these announcements were left on paper.

According to The Hindu, the Narendra Modi-led government had also announced 6,000 transit accommodation for Kashmiri Pandits employed by the Jammu and Kashmir administration in 2015. However, according to Home Ministry figures, only 1,025 houses were built by February 2022, and work on more than 50 percent of the houses has not yet begun.

What was the response from the government?

Union Home Minister Nityanand Rai, in a letter to Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on March 9, said that by 2023, 100 per cent housing for Kashmiri Pandits will be completed. At present 1488 houses are under construction and work on other houses will be started soon, said Rai.

Meanwhile, with the release of these figures, the issue of Kashmiri Pandits is likely to heat up the political atmosphere once again.
