Acting Congress president Sonia Gandhi is currently the UPA chief. However, as the Congress party continues to fail in the elections, there is a growing demand for a new UPA from the opposition. Most of the constituent parties in the UPA are saying that the doors of the UPA should be opened for many regional parties including Shiv Sena. With the Congress losing the recent five state elections and the Modi-led BJP winning four states, including Uttar Pradesh, pressure is mounting for a change of leadership in the UPA. The Nationalist Youth Congress (NYC) has started a resolution demanding handing over the UPA presidency to Sharad Pawar and now Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut has echoed the same sentiments.

“If Sharad Pawar is offered the role of UPA president, we will welcome him. If we want to unite the opposition parties at the national level and bring together the chief ministers of non-BJP ruled states, then Sharad Pawar can do it, ‘said Raut. In particular, Raut has already underlined the need for Sharad Pawar to lead the UPA.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut was instrumental in establishing the Mahavikas Aghadi in Maharashtra. Such an experiment is likely to be carried out in national politics as well, for which Raut has been active. Raut, who met Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi a few days ago, gave dinner to Varun Gandhi on Tuesday and talked with him for three hours. Raut was also linked to the visit of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao to Mumbai.
