New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today inaugurated an Orientation Program for Members of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council organized by Lok Sabha Secretariat at Parliament House Complex. He told the MLAs that the reputation of the representative body depended on the conduct and behavior of the people’s representatives and that the lack of prestige of the House was a threat to democracy. He appealed to the MLAs to contribute to enhance the prestige and prestige of these bodies as members of representative bodies. He said that in order to maintain the confidence of the people in these institutions, we should also consider the issues of declining number of sittings in the House and increasing obstruction of work.
Birla said that the people’s representatives should always be sensitive in their responsibility to nurture the trust of the people. He stressed the need for active participation of people’s representatives in conveying the voice of the people to the government through the House. Expressing the view that being a representative of the people is a matter of honor and dignity, he said that MLAs should keep in mind that this privilege comes with serious responsibilities. Therefore, it is the primary duty of the MLA to be responsible for the problems and difficulties of the people. He stressed that the people’s representatives should be the voice of the people by raising their grievances in the House so that the government can take appropriate steps to resolve them expeditiously.

Birla suggested that the people’s representatives should have a wide-ranging discussion on the law while making it in the House. Because these laws go further and bring about socio-economic change. In such a situation, it is necessary to include all the elements in making a law. Mr. Birla pointed out that in today’s age, policies are being formulated according to the rapidly changing socio-political realities. Therefore, the legislature needs to respond more to the needs of the people. He said that the members should be well acquainted with the rules and procedures of the House. These rules provide a variety of procedural means for members to raise various issues in the House.
He further said that the people’s representatives should read the old debates in the House, which would be useful for them to understand the subject in depth.

He emphasized the need to equip the legislature with state-of-the-art technology to create a ‘One Nation One Legislative Platform’ within the stipulated time frame. Omprakash Birla also suggested that MLAs should use information technology to enhance their relationship with the people, know their expectations and get their feedback on various issues.
