New Delhi: The central government yesterday decided to reduce the central excise duty on petrol and diesel. It was decided to reduce the excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 and on diesel by Rs 6. As a result, petrol will be cheaper by Rs 9.50 and diesel by Rs 7. While announcing this decision on behalf of the Center, Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had made a special appeal to the non-BJP ruled states. These states should now reduce their taxes on petrol and diesel, she said. After this, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray appealed to the central government to raise the central excise tax to the same level as before. Following Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu has criticized the Centre’s decision.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Dr. P. Dr P Thiaga Rajan retweeted Nirmala Sitharaman’s tweet late on Saturday night. P. Thiag Rajan did not ask the states when the central government raised taxes. In 2014, taxes on petrol and diesel were increased to 250 per cent on petrol and more than 900 per cent on diesel.

What kind of federalism is it that you are deducting 50 per cent tax from the increased taxes imposed and appealing to the state governments to reduce taxes? Thiag Rajan said.

What did Uddhav Thackeray say?

The central government had hiked the excise duty on petrol by Rs 18.42 per liter two months ago and today it has reduced it by Rs 8. Excise duty on diesel has also been increased by Rs 18.24 paise and has now been reduced by Rs 6. It is not right to pretend to increase prices first and then reduce rates nominally. The Chief Minister had said that the people of the country would be truly relieved only if the excise duty was reduced as it was six or seven years ago without trapping the people in the web of statistics.
