According to Transport Department officials, a fine of up to Rs 5,000 can be levied if the number plate of the vehicle is found to be of the wrong size and the numbers are written horizontally. If it is found that the word ‘caste’ is written, action will be taken against the accused as per section 177. The offender may be fined up to Rs 500 for the first time and up to Rs 1,500 for the second time.

On this basis, the Prime Minister’s Office had written a letter to the Uttar Pradesh government instructing it to ban it. It also said that the language of this method was not suitable for a civilized society.
After receiving instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Uttar Pradesh government ordered all the district transport officers to confiscate the vehicles and take other strict action. A campaign may also be launched by the Uttar Pradesh government to create awareness among the people.
In fact, under the Motor Vehicle Act, the Department of Transportation can take appropriate action against such vehicles and their owners if they find anything other than the number written on the number plate of the vehicle.
