New Delhi: After serious warning from the World Health Organization that consumption of cough medicine (cough syrup) of a Haryana-based pharmaceutical company in the African country of Gambia caused the death of 66 children, the investigation of this drug has also started in India. However, DCGI has said that the cough syrup manufactured by this pharma company is not sold in India. That has given relief to Indians. However, shocking truths have come out about the company that manufactures this cough syrup. The company was banned by the Bihar government in 2011 for manufacturing ‘adulterated’ and ‘substandard’ medicine. At the same time, children have lost their lives due to these drugs in other states too.

He said that the deaths were suspected to be due to drugs containing diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol. In January 2020, children died due to these elements in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal too. Pharmaceutical company M/s Digital Vision has said that it has been used unbalanced. CDSCO, however, has remained silent on the content of diethylene glycol.

Maiden Pharmaceuticals was one of the 39 Indian pharmaceutical companies blacklisted by Vietnam under Quality. In 2015, its product was found to be substandard in Gujarat and in 2017 the company was fined in Kerala. However, the supply of medicines has continued in the state.

Besides the 12 child deaths in Jammu in 2020, there were 33 deaths in Delhi in 1998, 14 in Mumbai in 1986 and 14 in Chennai in 1973. It is used as a solvent in some medicines. It has come to light that children are dying due to the suspicion that the company is overusing it.

According to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, the manufacture of this medicine which causes the death of children will be punishable with imprisonment for ten years and life imprisonment. But no one has been fined and punished till date. In the case of Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Digital Vision came across 7 such cases between 2014 and 2019, but even today these companies are doing business on a large scale.
