Beer now available in grocery stores; But ‘these’ conditions must be followed

Srinagar: Beer will now be sold in grocery stores in Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir Administrative Committee Chairman Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has approved the application in this regard on Monday. The decision has been taken in the meeting of the Council of Administration chaired by Manoj Sinha. Therefore, general stores are allowed to sell beer and other ready to drink in urban areas. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has granted license JKEL-2A for the sale of beer and ready-to-drink in departmental stores in urban areas, to incorporate liberal provisions in the Liquor Sales License and Sales Rules, 1984 and Production Policy, 2023-24. However, certain conditions have been laid down for such stores.

For Jammu and Srinagar, 1200 square feet area in a commercial complex, annual income of 5 crores has been stipulated. So, a condition of 2 crores has been kept for urban areas. Also, the stores whose annual income will be above 10 crores. Those shops can apply for separate liquor license. But the store should have started at least 12 months before submitting the application. However, newly opened stores will not be eligible to apply. Also, departmental stores at petrol pumps will not be considered for license.

It is mandatory to have at least six types of products available in the respective departmental stores, such as cereals, frozen food, bakery, products, beauty products, household goods, kitchen goods, sports goods, electronic goods, stationery etc. Meanwhile, the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir has heated up due to this decision of Naib Tehsildar. Women have strongly opposed this decision.
