The country’s embarrassing drop in the Global Hunger Index; Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal are also ahead of India

New Delhi: The latest list of Global Hunger Index has been released. India has fallen six places in Global Hunger Index 2022. India is now ranked 107th in the list of 121 countries. India’s position in this list can be known from the fact that in the South Asian country, all other countries except Afghanistan are ahead of India.

India has scored 29.1 in the Global Hunger Index 2022. Pakistan with severe flood situation and Sri Lanka with economic crisis are also ahead of India. Not only that, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar all got better ranking than India. In the Hunger Index, India has now reached the ranks of Zambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Haiti, Republic of Congo.

Opposition parties have attacked the government over the hunger index. Former finance minister and Congress leader P. Chidambaram said that India has declined during the 8 years of Modi government. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said things are going on to create a 5 trillion economy and 106 countries are better than us.

What is the Global Hunger Index and who publishes it?

Different NGOs prepare their own Hungary Index. Apart from this, the World Health Organization also prepares the Hunger Index. The Hungary Index that is now available is a joint effort between NGOs Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe. Data from the United Nations, UNICEF and other organizations including the Food and Agriculture Organization are used to prepare this report.

On what basis is it formed?

WHO considers three factors in creating the Global Inger Index. It considers food shortages, child malnutrition and child mortality. While NGOs- Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe prepare an index based on undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and child mortality i.e. undernutrition, malnutrition, stunted growth and child mortality.
