The tenure of the present Chief Justice Lalit will end on November 8, 2022. As per the procedure, the central government had asked Lalit to recommend the name of the next Chief Justice of the country. Uday Lalit recommended the name of the future Chief Justice to the Central Government a month before his retirement as per the procedure. Law Minister Rijiju has congratulated Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud after President Draupadi Murmu’s approval.
Dhananjaya Chandrachud’s father Justice Yashwant Chandrachud also served as the Chief Justice. He served as Chief Justice from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. Chief Justice Yashwant Chandrachud was working for a long period of 7 years and 4 months.

Dhananjay Chandrachud worked as a judge in Bombay High Court. After that he has served as Chief Justice of Allahabad Court. Dhananjay Chandrachud is known for liberal, progressive results. He recently gave a verdict allowing unmarried women to have abortions up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. Dhananjay Chandrachud has been serving as a judge in the Supreme Court since 13 May 2016. Chandrachud has also served as Advocate General.

Dhananjay Chandrachud completed his BA in Economics with Honors from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi and his LLB from the Department of Law, University of Delhi. Completed LLM degree and Jurisprudence from Harvard Law School, USA.
