Local people say that in the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb came with his caravan to attack Chitrakoot. Here many horses and donkeys in his fleet died of disease. When there was a shortage of donkeys in the fleet, cattle markets were organized locally to meet the shortage. Since then till today, this historic donkey fair is held on the Mandakini beach on the second day of Diwali.

This fair is conducted by Chitrakoot Nagar Parishad, District Satna. This year also thousands of donkeys, horses, mules have been brought for sale and purchase in this fair.
