Satna: It has been nearly 500 years since the Mughal rule in India ended, but many of their traditions continue unabated. The donkey fair held at Chitrakoot in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh is a symbol of Mughal rule. This fair is held every year near Ramghat in Chitrakoot. It lasts for three days. This fair was postponed for the last two years due to Kovid-19. But this time, more than one donkey is seen in the fair. Traders and cattle breeders from nearby districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh bring their donkeys, horses and mules to the fair.

Local people say that in the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb came with his caravan to attack Chitrakoot. Here many horses and donkeys in his fleet died of disease. When there was a shortage of donkeys in the fleet, cattle markets were organized locally to meet the shortage. Since then till today, this historic donkey fair is held on the Mandakini beach on the second day of Diwali.

This fair is conducted by Chitrakoot Nagar Parishad, District Satna. This year also thousands of donkeys, horses, mules have been brought for sale and purchase in this fair. These animals are named after movie actors. Their price is in lakhs. The fair is very crowded, as apart from cattle buyers, many Diwali fair goers come to see it.
