Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has advised the state government to conduct a high-level inquiry into the death of Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Speaker SL Dharme Gowda.

Dharme Gowda, 64, was found dead on a railway track in Chikmagalur district on Tuesday. Police said he had committed suicide. He was an MLA of the secular Janata Dal.

Dharme Gowda was pushed back on December 15 after a no-confidence motion was tabled in the House. Referring to the incident, Birla said, “The incident in the hall was unfortunate. Such an attack while he is on the bench is a matter of concern for democracy. His death must be investigated impartially and at the highest level.

The body of Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Speaker SL Dharmegauda was found near a railway track near Kadur in Chikmagalur. Police have also found a suicide note near Dharmegauda’s body. The cause of the suicide has not been identified yet.
