Why are the agitating farmers opposing the new agricultural laws?
Parliament passed three amended agricultural laws on September 20, 2020. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), an old ally of the BJP, had walked out during the vote on the Agriculture Bill in Parliament. Later, Akali Dal leader and Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also tendered her resignation as Union Minister.

When did the farmers’ movement against agricultural laws start?
From the second day after the passage of the Agriculture Bill, i.e. since September 2020, the farmers have raised their voices against these agricultural laws. After that, from November 26, the farmers marched towards the capital Delhi with the slogan ‘Let’s go to Delhi’. However, due to the Corona transition and law and order situation, the protesters were stopped at different borders of Delhi. For the last two months, farmers have been setting up shop here.
What is the government’s claim about agricultural laws?
The new agricultural reform laws are in line with the ‘One Nation One Market’ policy. Three agricultural reform laws will change the future of agriculture in the country. These laws can solve the basic problems that plague the agricultural sector. Farmers will now be able to determine the value of their produce. Whether to sell his farm produce to the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) or in the open market, this option will remain open to him. The government claims that farmers will also get the right to sell agricultural commodities at what rate. The government has said that voices are being raised against the law as it has hurt the interests of the arbitrators.
Farmers Association – What happened in the discussion between the government
On January 23, the eleventh discussion took place between the leaders of the farmers’ unions and the ministers of the Modi government at the Center. However, nothing can be deduced from this discussion. Both sides are adamant on their point. After the meeting, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar thanked the farmers’ unions for their co-operation and said the government was ready for another meeting if the proposed legislation was to be discussed. In the eleventh meeting, the two sides did not even meet for half an hour. The minister made us wait for about three and a half hours, the farmers’ leaders alleged.
What are the demands of the farmers?
– A special session of Parliament should be convened to repeal agricultural laws
– Give states the right to minimum guarantee (MSP) and purchase of crops
– The Center should not interfere in the jurisdiction of the states
– Ensure that the traditional purchasing system is maintained
– Implement the report of Swaminathan Committee and guarantee at least 50% more than the average cost of production.
– Reduce the price of diesel for agricultural use by 50%
– Repeal the Commission on Air Quality Management in NCR and the related ordinance 2020.
– At the same time, the punishment and fine provided for burning straw should be removed
– Immediately release the farmers arrested for burning paddy straw in Punjab
– Cancel the Electricity Ordinance 2020
– During the farmers ‘agitation, all the cases against the farmers’ leaders should be withdrawn and they should be released
Which farmers ‘organizations are involved in the farmers’ movement?
Farmers are protesting at the border of the capital under the coordination of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sangharsh Samanvay Samiti.
