Contempt of Supreme Court: Action against cartoonist after Kunal Kamra

New Delhi: Attorney General KK Venugopal has allowed the court to take action against cartoonist Rachita Taneja for contempt of court. Taneja had tweeted twice about the bail granted to Arnav Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV. Aditya Kashyap, a law student, had complained that the tweet was contempt of court. Rachita had drawn two cartoons against the Supreme Court decision. He shared the cartoon on social media through a Twitter handle called ‘Sanitary Panels’. Attorney General Venugopal gave the green light to the action, saying it was an attack on the court and a contempt of court.

Arnav Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV, was arrested on charges of inciting Naik and his mother to commit suicide. While granting bail to Arnav Goswami, question marks were raised over the Maharashtra government’s action. The court had also asked, “If we as a constitutional court do not respect the law and protect its freedom, who will?”

Earlier, Attorney General KK Venugopal had also allowed action against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamara. Kunal Kamara had also commented to the Supreme Court on granting bail to Arnav Goswami. ‘Today people are shamelessly condemning the Supreme Court and judges. They think it is freedom of expression. The time has come to be ready to be punished for attacking the Supreme Court in an unjust manner, ‘Venugopal had said at the time.
