New Delhi: A tweet by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) social media president Amit Malviya appears to have been labeled “manipulated media” by microblogging website Twitter.

This is the first time that the public has noticed that the social media company has started labeling ‘fake news’ in India.

Amit Malviya had posted a fact check tweet on November 28. In this, a photo shared by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Twitter was tweeted on one side and a video related to the same photo was tweeted by Malviya on the other side.

A photo shared by Rahul Gandhi captured the image of a Haryana policeman charging an elderly farmer with a stick in connection with the farmers’ agitation. The photo also went viral on social media.

Saying that Rahul Gandhi is lying, Amit Malviya shared a video without calling it ‘propaganda versus reality’. “India has got an incredible opposition leader after a long time,” Amit Malviya had said in the tweet. Malviya had also claimed on social media that the police only raised a stick at the concerned farmer but the stick did not even touch the farmer.

Malviya’s tweet also shows a notification of ‘tampered’ content from Twitter.

Alt News, a fact-checking website, shared a large video of the incident. In this, the police are clearly seen charging the protesting farmers with sticks. After that, there was a big criticism on social media for making a false claim by sharing a video showing partial truth from Malviya.
