What exactly happened on Sunday?
After the avalanche near Joshimath, 295 km from Dehradun, the Dhauliganga, Rishiganga and Alaknanda rivers, tributaries of the river Ganga, suddenly flooded, hitting the hilly region of Uttarakhand and spreading fear. NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad power project and Rishiganga power project were affected and many workers were stranded. Rescue teams rescued 16 workers trapped in the Tapovan project tunnel. However, 170 people are still missing. The avalanche has also washed away houses along the river. The densely populated villages on the lower reaches of the river are also feared to have been hit by the floods and many villagers have been evacuated. A spokesman for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) said the bridge near the village of Renee had completely lost contact with some border police stations. Later in the evening, however, it became clear that the river was safe.
The hydroelectric project was carried away
Glacier collapse at Joshimath in Uttarakhand on Sunday has swept away a hydropower project under construction there, affecting the supply of 200 MW of electricity from the national grid. Tehri and Koteshwar power plants in Uttarakhand have been shut down as a precautionary measure due to the avalanche.
Reaction of Uma Bharati
The natural calamity in Uttarakhand is a wake-up call for us. That is why as a minister, I am opposed to setting up a power project on the Ganges, said Union River Development Minister Uma Bharti.
There is no demand for Aquarius
On the other hand, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad has decided not to make any demand to the Uttarakhand government for the Kumbh Mela to be held at Haridwar. The decision was taken against the backdrop of a snowstorm in Uttarakhand on Sunday in Chamoli district.
