Highlights:
- Shabnam to be the first woman to be hanged in post-independence period?
- ‘Shabnam’s crimes should be forgiven for being a woman’
- Shabnam is lodged in Rampur Jail from July 2019
Mahant Paramahansa Das made this demand to the President while talking to the Times of India. ‘According to Hindu scriptures, the position of a woman is much higher than that of a man. Punishing a woman to death will not benefit society. So it will invite misfortune and calamity. Shabnam’s guilt is not forgivable, but as a woman, her guilt should be forgiven, ‘said Mahant Paramahansa Das.
‘As the guru of Hinduism, I demand to the President that Shabnam’s mercy petition be accepted. She has atoned for her crime in prison. If she was sentenced to death, it would be the most unfortunate moment in history. Our Constitution gives the President a unique general power. Using this power, the President should accept Shabnam’s mercy petition, ‘said Paramahansa.
Shabnam and her boyfriend Salim will be hanged in Babankhedi village in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh on April 14-15, 2008 for brutally murdering Saad family members along with her boyfriend. Shabnam has been lodged in Rampur Jail since July 2019.
