Apart from the Batla House encounter case on September 13, 2008, Arij Khan is also accused of being involved in bomb blasts in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Uttar Pradesh and Jaipur.
Batla House Encounter Case
On September 19, 2008, Delhi Police clashed with suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists at Batla House in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area. Atif Amin and Mohammad Sajid, both suspected terrorists, were killed by police during the encounter. The other two suspects, Saif Mohammad and Arij Khan, managed to escape. The accused Jishan was arrested by the police.
The operation was led by Delhi Police Inspector and Encounter Specialist Mohan Chandra Sharma. He was shot in the back during the encounter. He died in it. Sharma’s death was also controversial. This is because Sharma had joined the Delhi Police on June 26, 1989 as a sub-inspector. During his tenure, Mohan Chandra Sharma had ‘encountered’ more than 35 terrorists. More than 80 terrorists were arrested. After Sharma’s encounter, there were demonstrations all over the country, including Delhi. Political parties and human rights groups have called for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Arif Khan is a resident of Uttar Pradesh
According to information received, Arij Khan alias Junaid is a native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. After 2008, Arij never returned to Azamgarh. Arij Khan had absconded after firing on police inspector Mohan Chandra Sharma at Batla House. He was also involved in the 2007 Lucknow court blasts in Uttar Pradesh, Faizabad and Varanasi. Arija had also mastered the technique of making bombs.
