Love Jihad: Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly passes ‘Freedom of Religion Bill’ against ‘Love Jihad’

Bhopal: In Madhya Pradesh, the ‘Freedom of Religion Bill’ has been passed in the Assembly to curb ‘love jihad’ cases. The bill provides for harsher punishments against love jihad. Earlier, the Governor had approved the Freedom of Religion Ordinance in a cabinet meeting on January 9. Violation of this law is punishable by imprisonment for 1 to 10 years and a fine of Rs one lakh.

According to various provisions of the bill, a person violating the Religious Freedom Act by concealing his true religion (so-called love jihad) can be sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison. You may also have to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.

Also, if an attempt is made to carry out mass conversion (two or more persons), it is punishable by 5 to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

According to the bill, if any person is found to have violated the Act, he may be liable to a fine of Rs 25,000, including imprisonment for 1 to 5 years.

In the case of minors, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, imprisonment for 2 to 10 years and a minimum fine of Rs 50,000 has been provided.

Clean converts or religious converts must give 60 days notice to the District Collector. Those who convert without informing the District Collector may face imprisonment of at least 3 to 5 years and a fine of at least Rs 50,000.

If a person is found to have violated these rules more than once, he or she may face up to 5 to 10 years in prison. According to the Act, a victim, her parents, siblings or parents who have been forced to convert for action can file a complaint.
