The Uttar Pradesh Home Department on Thursday issued orders to all district collectors to remove encroachments in the name of religious places. In this case, all the district collectors will have to inform how many religious encroachments on public places were removed by March 14.
In Uttar Pradesh, religious encroachments on public roads (including highways), streets and sidewalks erected on or after January 1, 2011 will be removed. Such constructions are now banned.
It is learned that the directive was issued by the Home Department while implementing the order passed by the High Court. All the district collectors will have to submit a report to the government implementing these orders. The Chief Secretary will review himself within two months.
Instructions have been issued to all the Divisional Commissioners, ADG Zones, Commissioners of Police, IGs, DIG Range, DM and SP in this regard. According to these instructions, religious constructions on public roads, streets, sidewalks constructed before January 1, 2011 should be shifted within six months after consulting the concerned people. Religious structures should be removed without the consent of the citizens and such reports should be sent to the government.
The district authorities have been given the responsibility to remove encroachments on roads, streets and sidewalks by religious structures on or after 10 Jan 2016. If any encroachment is found, it will be a contempt of court and the concerned officer will be personally responsible for it, the order said.
