Controversy over new parliament building land worship; ‘Why worship? There should be interfaith prayer’

New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has opposed the bhoomi pujan ceremony of the new Parliament House. The party has said the program is against secularism. Many other leaders have also questioned the government’s priorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament House on December 10.

Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, “If Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to pay homage, I will urge him to invite leaders of other religions as well.” The purpose behind this is that every citizen of the country should feel that the Parliament House is theirs.

NCP leader Majid Memon has also reacted to this. A prayer meeting of people of all faiths should be held before the groundbreaking of the new parliament building, Memon said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay his last respects at the ground breaking ceremony of the new Parliament House building on December 10. The new parliament building will be earthquake proof. Rs 971 crore will be spent for the construction of this building and the building will be constructed in 64,500 square meters. The new building will be 17,000 square meters larger than the old one. The contract for this work has been awarded to Tata Project Limited. There will be about 888 seats for Lok Sabha members and the new building will have more than 326 seats for Rajya Sabha members. Also, the Lok Sabha hall can seat 1,224 members at a time, said Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Conditional approval of Bhumi Pujan by the Supreme Court
