New Delhi:Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Ranjit Sinha has died. Ranjit Sinha, a retired IPS officer of the 1974 batch, breathed his last in Delhi at around 4.30 am today. He was 68 years old at the time of his death.

Ranjit Sinha was the Director General of the CBI as well as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

On November 22, 2012, he was appointed as the Director of CBI for the next two years. He had earlier led the Railway Security Force and held senior positions in the Patna, Delhi CBI.

Ranjit Sinha was also embroiled in controversy over allegations of corruption. The CBI had also registered a case of corruption against him. He was accused of influencing the investigation into the coal procurement scam while he was the director of the CBI. The Supreme Court had directed the CBI to probe the suspected role of Sinha, a retired IPS officer of the 1974 batch. An FIR was lodged against Sinha three months after the order.
