Avalanche in Uttarakhand: Two dead, 291 safe; Rescue operations started by the army

Chamoli: Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has once again been hit by a natural calamity. Many road workers were stranded here due to avalanches in the area due to heavy snowfall near Sumana in Niti valley of Chamoli district. According to information provided by the Central Command of the Indian Army, a camp of the Border Road Organization (BRO) was suddenly found in a blizzard. Two more bodies have been recovered by the Indian Army and 291 people have been evacuated.

Where exactly did this happen?

The incident took place on Friday, April 23 at around 4.00 pm. On the Sumana-Rimkhim road in Uttarakhand, an avalanche struck about 4 km from Sumana and hit the area with a blizzard. It is located just a few kilometers from the India-China border on the Joshimath-Malari-Girithobla-Sumana-Rimkhim road.

A detachment of Border Road Organization (BRO) and two labor camps were located on the road. There is an army camp at a distance of about 3 km from Sumana. The area has been experiencing torrential rains and snowfall for the last five days. It is still snowing.

Rescue operations by the army

Upon receiving the information of the avalanche, the Indian Army immediately took up the rescue operation. The army evacuated 291 workers from the avalanche area. They were given emergency help at a military base. Search and rescue operations are still underway to find laborers in both camps who are still missing. So far, two bodies have been recovered by the army.

Landslides in many places, hindering the delivery of aid

Landslides have also occurred at four or five places on the way to the site. Therefore, the army is also facing difficulties in reaching the spot and delivering aid. On the Bhapkund to Sumana road, Border Road Task Force teams have been working to remove the debris from the landslide site since yesterday evening. The work could still take six to eight hours, according to the Indian Army.

Alert issued by CM

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirtha Singh Rawat issued the alert on Friday night. It is learned that a glacier has collapsed in Sumana in Niti valley. I have issued an alert in this regard. I am in constant touch with the district administration and the BRO, ‘said Tirtha Singh Rawat.

Heavy snowfall is hampering rescue efforts. The Chief Minister had also said that other projects, including NTPC, have been ordered to suspend work at night to prevent any untoward incident.

It may be recalled that a major accident had taken place in Chamoli district in February when the Dhauliganga river flooded due to a glacier eruption. The bodies of 54 people were recovered after the accident, while hundreds are still missing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
