KK Shailaja: ‘Rockstar Health Minister’ Shailaja out of Teacher Vijayan’s cabinet

Thiruvananthapuram: For the second time in Kerala, a government led by Pinarayi Vijayan has come to power. However, this year, the name of Health Minister KK Shailja has been dropped from the CPM cabinet. As a result, many have raised eyebrows. Chief Minister P Vijayan met Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Tuesday evening and claimed power.

On Tuesday, Marxist Communist Party legislators formally re-elected Pinarayi Vijayan as the leader of the parliamentary party and chief minister. The swearing-in ceremony of his new cabinet, including Pinarayi Vijayan, is scheduled for Thursday. A total of 11 leaders have been named in the second Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Health Minister Shailja, however, has been made a whip by the party. Shailja also welcomed the party’s decision.

However, KK Shailja (Shailja Teacher), who proved his uniqueness as Kerala’s health minister during the Corona transition, did not get a place in the cabinet. KK Shailja, 64, had defeated his rival by a margin of more than 60,000 votes from his constituency in Kannur district in the recent assembly elections.

As Kerala’s health minister, Shailja had handled the situation competently in the first wave of the corona transition. He was appreciated from all walks of life. Earlier, his ‘managerial skills’ were appreciated during the Nipah virus crisis. In September last year, UK magazine named Shailja Teacher the ‘Top Thinker of the Year 2020’.

Pinarayi Vijayan’s new cabinet includes CPM Central Committee member and three-time MLA M.V. Govindan, Central Committee member and former chairman K Radhakrishnan, State Secretariat members and former MPs P Rajiv and KN Balagopal, State Committee members Saji Cherian, VN Vasan, V Sivankutty and Mohammad.

R Bindu, wife of former mayor of Thrissur and acting secretary of the CPM, LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s son-in-law Rias have also been included in the cabinet.

Former journalist and two-time MLA Veena George, politician-businessman and two-time MLA V Abdurrahman are also in the cabinet.

State Committee Member M.B. Rajesh is the party chairman while TP Ramakrishnan is the parliamentary party secretary. The decision of the departments will be taken by the Chief Minister later.
