The Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (SEC) to hold local body elections in nine districts of Tamil Nadu and announce the results by September 15.
The Election Commission demanded an extension due to the growing number of patients in Corona. However, in the present case everyone is pushing the cause of the corona. The bench said that elections could be held on demand from political parties.
Justice Hemant Gupta and Justice. The order was passed by a bench headed by Aniruddha Bose. Earlier, on December 11, 2019, the Supreme Court had given four months to hold the elections. Even after 18 months, the election did not take place. The term of these local self-governing bodies has ended in 2018-19. Currently there are no people’s representatives in this place. If the elections are not held now, contempt of court orders will be taken, the court said.
Immediately after the order, constituencies in these districts will be planned and election programs will be announced, Election Commission lawyers said.
