While I was in jail, many leaders involved in the movement betrayed the citizens of the state. But I want to assure the people that the anti-CAA movement will start once again. No (illegal) foreign national will be allowed to stay in the state, Akhil Gogoi said after his release from jail. Akhil Gogoi had entered his constituency as an MLA for the first time after his release from jail.
On June 22, a special NIA court acquitted MLA Akhil Gogoi and his three colleagues in Shivsagar in December 2019 of all charges under the UAPA for their alleged role in the violent agitation against the CAA Act in Assam. Gogoi and his accomplices were charged in two cases under the Unlawful Acts (Prevention) Act, 1967. In December 2019, he was jailed for 19 months for his alleged role in a violent agitation.
In the recent assembly elections, he won from Shivsagar constituency. Akhil Gogoi, founder of Raijor Dal, got 57,219 votes. He became the first person to win an election from prison.
He also accused the BJP-led government of not being sensitive to the problems of the people in the state. A new government will be formed in 2026. He also said that the ‘BJP Hatao’ movement has started from today.
Remarkably, Gogoi had to stop at several places on the Shivsagar road, about 400 km from Guwahati. His supporters and locals were seen standing in line to welcome him. This was Gogoi’s first Shivsagar tour after winning the election.
