New Delhi: The speed limit on highways and expressways in the country is likely to be raised soon. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has instructed his ministry officials to improve the maximum speed limit for vehicles. Gadkari has instructed to increase the speed limit of vehicles to 20 km per hour according to different types of roads. The similarity will be maintained in the speed limit on a particular route. Gadkari also told officials that there should be no frequent changes in the speed limit on short distance routes.

Nitin Gadkari held a review meeting with officials in his ministry. He gave instructions in this meeting. Currently, the maximum speed limit for cars notified by the Ministry of Transport on National Highways is 100 kmph. The speed limit on the expressway is 120 km per hour. State police and other agencies have the power to set speed limits on highways and expressways in their area. This has led to changes in speed limits in some parts of the national highway according to different states.

Problems with vehicles with different speed limits

Citizens have to suffer as there are different speed limits on certain routes in cities. There are also not enough signboards indicating speed limits on these routes. This exacerbates the problem. According to road safety experts, speed limits on roads should be well defined and notified. It will also reduce the problems of the citizens and reduce the incidence of accidents.
