Two years ago today, on August 5, 2019, a decision was taken in Parliament to delete Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Nityanand Rai, crime statistics are compiled from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). These figures are published in the NCRB’s annual report ‘Crime in India’.
Use of PSA on more than 2300 people
According to the English daily Indian Express, more than 2,200 people have been charged under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in more than 1,200 cases in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019. Of these, 46 per cent were arrested under the UAPA and more than 30 per cent under the PSA Act are still lodged in jails in and outside Jammu and Kashmir.
According to The Indian Express, according to official figures provided by the police, 699 people were arrested under the PSA in 2019 and 160 in 2020. By July 2021, 95 people had been arrested under the PSA. Of these, 284 are still in custody.
