Some unidentified persons hurled petrol bombs at Sangma’s house and fled. The Chief Minister’s residence is located in the Third Mile area of Upper Shillong.
According to police, the incident took place around 10.15 pm. The assailants, who came from a vehicle, threw bottles filled with petrol near the Chief Minister’s residence. However, due to the vigilance of the security forces, no one was injured in the incident.
The first bottle filled with petrol was thrown in the front of the residence and the second in the back of the house. This caused a fire, but the watchman immediately put out the fire.
Internet ban in four districts
The state government imposed a curfew in Shillong on Independence Day after vandalism and arson in and around the state capital. The curfew will continue till 5.00 am on August 17. Mobile internet services have been banned in almost four districts of the state.
Rebel leader Cheristerfield Thangkhu dies
Violence has escalated in the region following an encounter with former Meghalaya rebel leader Cherisherfield Thangkhu. As the situation in the state is simmering after the incident, state Home Minister Lakhan Rimbui abruptly tendered his resignation on Sunday evening. While resigning, he also wrote a letter to Chief Minister Sangma.

“I am deeply saddened by the fact that Chesterfield was killed in a police raid after a police raid,” Rimbui said in a letter.
At the same time, Home Minister Rimbui has asked the Chief Minister to release him from the responsibility of the Home Ministry as soon as possible. He hopes that an independent and impartial inquiry into the death of Cherisstarfield will be easier and that the truth will come out. He also demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
His party, the United Democratic Party, has also backed his resignation. Rimbui also said that he took this decision only after discussions with the party.
