According to the information received, the incident took place around 10.00 am on Saturday in S Sehken village of Singangat sub-division near the Myanmar border in Suraj Chand district. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a convoy of military officials.
Colonel Viplav Tripathi (Commanding Officer – 46 AR), his wife and the couple’s son were killed on the spot. Three other members of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT) were also killed in the attack.
The other injured were shifted to Behiang Primary Health Center for treatment. The vehicles allegedly carrying security personnel were targeted by terrorists. According to military sources, the convoy included members of the officer’s family along with the QRT team. State Chief Minister N Biren Singh has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “symbol of cowardice”.
Manipur’s People’s Liberation Army is said to be behind the incident. The organization was formed in 1978 to demand an independent Manipur. This organization was led by Bishwesar Singh. The Indian government has declared the group a “terrorist organization”. In Manipur, the group frequently attacks Indian security forces.
