New Delhi: The Central Government has extended the tenure of the Heads of Enforcement (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to five years. This means that any officer holding the post of Director of ED and CBI will now be able to serve for 5 years. The Center has extended the tenure of the heads of both the institutions through an ordinance.

Sanjay Mishra is currently the Director of the Directorate of Enforcement. His term was ending this week. However, now after the ordinance, the government can extend their tenure for another two years if it wants. However, no order has been issued by the government regarding Sanjay Mishra yet. At present, the tenure of the directors of these two Central Investigation Agencies is two years.

President Ramnath Kovind has approved the ordinance as the session of Parliament has not started yet. It is imperative to take immediate action in view of the facts, as they are satisfied with the facts. The CVC (Amendment) Ordinance and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Act have been issued to allow extension of tenure of directors of CBI and ED before the forthcoming winter session of Parliament.

Extension of tenure shocks opponents

In Maharashtra and other states, the ED and CBI are investigating various cases. In Maharashtra, former Home Minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh is being targeted by the ED. Also, action is being taken against Shiv Sena leader Pratap Saranaik and some other leaders. The ED has raided Maharashtra two days ago in connection with the Waqf Board land scam. The raids were carried out in Pune. Last month, relatives of Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar were raided in Mumbai and Pune.

In August, the ED raided seven places belonging to Shiv Sena MP Bhavana Gawli. The ED had also raided the house of Shiv Sena leader Anandrao Adsul in connection with the co-operative bank scam. Also, in a money laundering case, the ED had issued a notice to Transport Minister Anil Parab. The ED had also issued notice to Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
