The chargesheet filed by the CBI includes offenses under Section 302 (murder), SC-ST Act, Section 376 (rape), Section 376D (gang rape) and Section 376A (death due to rape or maladaptation).
A 20-year-old victim of alleged gang-rape and physical abuse in a village in Hathras on September 14 died while undergoing treatment at a Delhi hospital. On September 30, the victim’s body was cremated by the police in her village without the presence of her family. The police were criticized at all levels for this. Officials, however, claimed that the funeral was conducted at the behest of the family.
In October, the apex court had directed the Allahabad High Court to oversee the probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
On the other hand, Sandeep Thakur, the main accused in the Hathras case, had written a letter to the Uttar Pradesh police claiming that he and three other accused were being implicated in the case. In the letter, he had accused the victim’s mother and brother of atrocities. He also demanded justice.
