New Delhi: Congress Acting President Sonia Gandhi has asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to provide funds in the budget for the development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in proportion to the population. Sonia Gandhi also said that four point initiatives should be planned for the development of this community. The party’s Maharashtra in-charge H. K. Patil gave this information on Friday. Maharashtra has a Mahavikas Aghadi government of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP. The Congress party is committed to the welfare of the Dalits, the deprived and the backward classes, said Patil. As we are participating in the alliance government in Maharashtra, we are very much aware of our responsibility towards these sections. A meeting of educated people from this community was also organized, Patil further said.

According to Patil, the four-point program that Sonia Gandhi has told Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray about allocating funds in the budget according to the population of the community is key. Sonia Gandhi has also suggested that reservations should be introduced in government contracts and schemes for projects owned by people belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and vacancies reserved for these communities should be filled in various departments.

Sonia Gandhi has also suggested that education, technical training and skill development for the youth of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes should be given top priority and scholarship facilities should be expanded. The selection process for the post of chairman of the Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee has started and a decision will be taken in the next few days, Patil said.
