Harvest : The tunnel of Narmada valley project at Slimanabad in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh collapsed late on Saturday night. 9 laborers were crushed due to erosion in the canal. Five of them have been evacuated till this morning. Attempts are being made to evacuate 4 trapped workers. While the laborers were working between 7.30 pm and 8 pm, the soil suddenly eroded and the laborers were crushed under it.

After the incident, there was a big mound of soil at a depth of 30 feet. It is learned that there was a problem in the rescue operation. Rescue squads dug up the soil to get the workers out safely. As soon as he got information about the incident, MLA of Bahoribandh Assembly Pranay Pandey rushed to the spot and got information. He discussed the matter with the Collector-SP. It is learned that the engineers of Narmada Development Authority have given this information to the district administration. The three released laborers Deepak, Narmada and Munnidas are residents of Padkur village in Singrauli district. The trapped laborers are said to be from Chitrangi in Singrauli, Nagpur in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.

In the underground canal, the TVM machine is about 80 feet deep from the surface. In some parts of the machine, a pit-like well is being dug near Khermai for repair work. It was dug to a depth of about 25 feet and was reinforced with bricks and cement. It is learned that both the parts collapsed late in the evening. Workers trapped in the pit are safe. They have minor injuries. The rescue squad went inside and spoke to two laborers. Oxygen is provided for the workers who have gone deep inside. Rescue teams have launched rescue operations to evacuate the workers late at night, the Narmada Valley Development Authority said.

The administration and police have set up a green corridor to the district hospital and medical college to evacuate the remaining four workers trapped in the tunnel after the Slimanabad tragedy. The workers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were rescued. The soil is slowly being removed. The soil cannot be removed immediately. All workers are safe and responding, the district collector said.

The Salimanabad underground canal of Bargi diversion project has cost Rs. 799 crore and its length is 11.95 km. The agreement was signed in March 2008 and was to be completed by July 2011 over a period of 40 months. The Chief Minister has instructed the concerned to complete the tunnel work by June 2023.
