Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Piyush Goyal informed about the decision of Modi government. After reviewing the Prime Minister’s Poor Welfare Food Scheme, the scheme has been extended for another six months. Goyal said free foodgrains would be distributed through ration shops till September.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Poor Welfare Food Scheme has become a major support for the poor during the Kovid crisis. Lockdown had to be imposed after Corona infiltrated India. At that time, the central government had started this scheme in March 2020. First, free foodgrains were provided under this scheme till June 2020. Since then, the scheme has been continuously extended. Now that the third wave of Corona has subsided, the crisis of Corona is not completely over. A fourth wave of corona is being feared. In view of all these conditions, the scheme has been extended for six months. About 80 crore people are benefiting from this scheme and 5 kg of foodgrains are being provided free of cost per person per month.
