New Delhi : Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will be the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India (CJI Supreme Court). N. V. Ramana’s tenure as Chief Justice ends on August 26. Ramana then recommended that Lalit be his successor. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit i.e. U. U. Lalit will occupy the highest post of the Supreme Court. With the appointment of Lalit, a pillar of honor has been buried in the veins of Konkan.

As per the established rule, the outgoing Chief Justice has to recommend the name of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is second to Justice Ramana in the order of seniority.

Uday Lalit will be the second Chief Justice who did not serve as a High Court judge before becoming a Supreme Court judge. He has reached this position directly from advocacy. Before him, the 13th Chief Justice of the country, SM Sikri, had achieved this feat in 1971:

Uday Lalit is known for his gentle nature. The appointment of Uday Lalit as the Chief Justice is being considered as a unique coincidence when the historical political situation has arisen in Maharashtra. But even Uday Lalit will not be able to remain the Chief Justice for long. His tenure will be only 74 days. Uday Lalit will retire on November 8, 2022 if he becomes Chief Justice.

take Uday Umesh Lalit is a son of Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Their original home is at Girye-Kotharwadi. His grandfather settled in Solapur to practice law. His father Umesh Lalit was a judge in the High Court from 1974 to 1976. Uday Lalit completed his education from Mumbai University and worked with senior lawyer Sorabji. Lalit was an independent advocate in the Supreme Court for many years. Uday Lalit has been serving as a judge of the Supreme Court since August 13, 2014.
