New Delhi: The Supreme Court has made important remarks on a petition seeking felling of trees for the Krishna Govardhan Road Project in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court, while hearing the petition, said that cutting down trees in the name of Lord Krishna cannot be allowed. The Uttar Pradesh government has been directed to get the necessary information about cutting down trees for the Krishna-Govardhan road in Mathura. The apex court said that the inspection should not be based on the price of timber but on the oxygen capacity of the plants. The Supreme Court has given the Uttar Pradesh government four weeks to investigate. The petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by the Uttar Pradesh government and its authorities, including the Public Works Department. In this, a request has been made to the Supreme Court to allow the cutting of 2940 trees for the Krishna-Govardhan road project in Mathura.
Non-Supreme Court looking only at the price of wood
Under this project, the road leading to the temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna in Mathura will be widened. However, trees cannot be cut down in the name of Lord Krishna. The court said it needed to look at the oxygen capacity of a particular tree, not just the price of the wood.

Environmentalist M.K. C. Mehta and others had filed PILs. Following the hearing on the petition, the apex court bench asked how many trees need to be cut down for the Krishna-Govardhan road project.
